Housing Rights offers a free independent mortgage debt advice service to people in Northern Ireland who are worried about losing their home.

We can give you free mortgage debt advice if you are;

  • due to attend a repossession hearing at court,
  • worried about negative equity, or
  • afraid of losing your home.

I'm having problems paying my mortgage.

Let your lender know. Your lender should want to know if you’re having problems paying your mortgage, so that you can work together towards a resolution before the situation gets any worse.  There are certain steps that your lender has to take before you can be brought to court. I've missed some mortgage payments and my bank is sending me letters.

Your lender will usually send you a letter stating you that you have missed one or two payments.  It is best to speak with your lender before solicitors are instructed. My lender has been granted a possession order.

I've received papers to go to court. Do I need to attend?

I have received a letter from the enforcement of judgements office. Do I have to move out of my home now?

I want to move, but my house is in negative equity.

You will usually need to get the lender's consent before you can sell the property if it's in negative equity. You may not be able to sell your home without making a loss, but there are options available. We can explain what your options are if you're in negative equity.  The government funds us to help people like you, so we don't charge fees for helping you with debt problems.
