 The UN Special Rapporteur on racism and human rights Professor Tendayi Achiume has has published a report on racism and discrimination in the UK. The report makes specific mention of the controversial "right to rent" checks as a policy that claims to be racially-neutral, but has an ultimately discriminatory impact on people from minority backgrounds.

Housing Rights gave oral evidence to the Joint Inquiry by the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee and the Work and Pensions Committee. This Inquiry is specifically interested in the planned end of welfare mitigations in March 2020, Universal Credit (UC) and the two child limit.

A research initiative from the University of Ulster and the University of York plans to explore claimant perspectives on the experience of receiving Universal Credit as well as developing recommendations for the future evolution of Universal Credit in Northern Ireland. The project also hopes to generate lessons about the specific and distinctive operation of Universal Credit in Northern Ireland that can be shared with policymakers in the rest of the UK.

The next meeting of the Housing Advice Practitioners’ Forum will be held on Tuesday 25th June at 2.30pm at Housing Rights.

Mitigation payments have really helped the people of Northern Ireland to deal with the financial stresses created by welfare reforms like the bedroom tax. These mitigations are shortly due to end, something that will cause pain and hardship for many. However, mitigation payments can and have been lost. Victoria, one of our advisers recently assisted a client facing eviction due to the loss of his mitigation payment.

Housing Rights celebrated all the volunteers who help us tackle homelessness and housing problems with a night of ten pin bowling in Belfast.

The Tenant Fees Act bans most letting fees in England for new or renewed tenancy agreements entered into on or after 1 June 2019. The Act also places caps on a number of legitimate charges, including the amount that can be requested for a tenancy deposit and the amount that can be charged for amending a tenancy agreement.
