Homelessness strategy focuses on ending homelessness together
The newly published homelessness strategy for 2022 to 2027 focuses on preventing homelessness. It has 3 objectives
- Prioritising preventing homelessness
- Providing settled appropriate accommodation and support
- Helping customers transition from homelessness into settled accommodation
The Housing Executive stresses that issues, including funding and staffing problems, must be addressed if they hope to achieve these objectives.
Involving people with lived experience in solutions to homelessness
The Housing Executive intends to involve people who have been homeless as it delivers the new homelessness strategy. We fully support the Housing Executive putting people affected by homelessness at the centre of their design process. We welcome their commitment to offering ‘... a range of opportunities for people with lived experience to get involved in decisions that affect them’.
Prevention of homelessness is the best cure
Housing Rights believes that prevention of homelessness is the best cure. The Housing Executive’s strategy reinforces the importance of preventing homelessness and sets out multiple ways it hopes to achieve this objective.
The 5-year strategy will work to
- Identify ways to prevent homelessness before crisis point
- Promote training opportunities for people who work in the sector and for people at risk of homelessness
- Make the public more aware of the varied and complex nature of homelessness so those approaching crisis know where to turn
- Improving access to employment and skills training for people at risk of homelessness
