The hidden homeless - those you won't see on the street
When Steven first contacted Housing Rights Service, he had already been on the social housing list for over 5 years. In that time, Steven had been living in his mother’s house, sofa surfing between friends’ places and spent one and a half years living in a hostel.
The pressure of not having a home was impacting on Steven’s health. He was sufferering from serious issues, including severe anxiety attacks. The hostel he was living in was not a suitable environment for him. It was a very tough time for Steven.
“ I was in that hostel for a year and half. I would see people coming and going, moving on to their own home. I felt the world was against me until I got help from Housing Rights Service."
When Steven got in touch with Housing Rights Service, he felt relief that progress was finally being made. His Housing Rights Service adviser got to work, gathering evidence from Steven’s doctors, our in-house solicitors and liaising with the Housing Executive.
We were able to help Steven find a flat that was suitable for his needs and close to his family and friends.
A home of his own
It took 7 years of asking for help from friends and family, staying in hostels and finally, approaching Housing Rights Service, before Steven found his home. He is now enjoying making it his own, and knowing his future is there.
“Right now, all the pressure to find a home is gone and I can start living a life. Im enjoying decorating, having my own privacy and having my own home. I am where I want to be. I have a home, and I’m happy.“
Housing Rights Service works to prevent homelessness
Luckily, we were able to help Steven before his homeless situation worsened and impacted further on his health. Steven was incredibly grateful with the support and progress that was made once he got into contact with us.
To help prevent homelessness, Housing Rights Service believes that everyone should have access to specialist free advice and support. This early intervention can help save homes.
Ursula Toner, Advice Services Manager with Housing Rights Service says
“Breakdown of tenancy and sharing arrangements can end up with someone becoming homeless. If people can’t find somewhere else to live, they may move into a hostel or sofa surf. The exact number of hidden homeless is unknown. We would urge anyone who is homeless or at risk of losing their home to get advice.“
Housing Rights Service offers free advice on housing options, advocates on people’s behalf and if necessary can represent people in court. If you need advice, contact us through our advice line on 028 90245640 or online help is available at www.housingadviceNI.org.
