Housing Rights responds to the Department for Communities Draft Housing Supply Strategy

Last year we responded to the Call for Evidence on the Housing Supply Strategy. We can see areas in the draft strategy which reflect some of our recommendations. This response to the draft Housing Supply Strategy is to add further to the development of the strategy.

We want to see:

  • The Executive adopt this strategy. This will give effect to the cross-departmental approach required.
  • The Department bring forward legislative reform which helps prevent and stop homelessness.
  • A lived experience Objective added to the Strategy. This should focus on a co-design approach.

We also recommend that the Department:

  • Add a sub-title which makes the strategy's purpose easier to understand. “A plan for housing for people in NI” would be appropriate.
  • Use clearer outcomes and indicators in the strategy. We have suggested what these may be in our full response.
  • Include a review of policy and legislation in regards to homelessness.
  • Place focus on working collaboratively to ensure people have access to the support required to access and sustain homes.
  • Place focus on improving health and well-being when developing housing standards.
  • Ensure the strategy allows for participation in the decisions made in the Strategy. They should also focus on adopting a co-design approach.
