Finding a home for James
James is 20 years old and a very vulnerable young adult. He spent time in care growing up, and has struggled with mental health issues in his life.
James had a tenancy with a housing association, but unfortunately experienced intimidation, threats and antisocial behavior at the property. He became frightened to stay there and ended up staying with his Aunt, where he felt safe.
James moved out of his Aunt’s as he was worried about trouble being brought to her door, but felt unable to return to his home. James had nowhere to go for over a week, and slept rough in Belfast.
How Housing Rights was able to help
When James called to Housing Rights, we worked to get him a place to stay as a matter of urgency. We thought James would do well in Flax Foyer, accommodation that is exclusively available to young people. We arranged for James and his social worker to meet with staff at the foyer. We also got MACS and Start360, who had previously worked with James, to provide references for him. As a result, James was offered a new flat the next day.
With our help, the Northern Ireland Housing Executive has recognised that James is a vulnerable homeless person and, as a result, he will eventually find a more permanent place to live. For now, he is thriving at Flax Foyer. They provide extra support and training for young people. James’ whole outlook on life has improved greatly and he is making plans to get back to work and get further training.
When everyone has a home
Housing Rights believes everyone should have a home. A home is the foundation which allows people not only to develop important family and social relationships, but also to gain an education, employment and access to other important services such as health and social care. Ultimately, it helps people to realise their potential and to make a positive contribution to society.
