Helping constituency offices to deal with the fallout of Welfare Reform

Welfare reform continues to have a huge impact on the housing situation of low income households in Northern Ireland.  As well as advice agencies the public often approach their constituency offices for help and support with housing issues

With this in mind, and to ensure people approaching their constituency office can access information and advice on how to deal with the fallout of Welfare Reform, Housing Rights held a training session on Universal Credit and Housing for constituency office staff and MLA’S at the Long Gallery in Stormont.

As well as getting a grounding in the context and background of Universal Credit and the differences between it and Housing Benefit, attendees were taken through practical issues like helping people navigate the claims and appeals process.

After the session 83% of attendees felt that their knowledge and understanding of the system had greatly improved.
