Antisocial Behaviour and Housing
Housing Rights’ Antisocial Behaviour course will run for a second time on 2 December 2015. The first took place on the 9th September in Belfast. The sold out course was a huge success with participants.
This one day course focuses in particular on social landlords and tenants, and examined legal responsibilities of both social landlords and tenants, legislative procedural requirements which must be followed when dealing with cases of antisocial behaviour and the most recent case law in relation to antisocial behaviour. It also looked at potential upcoming changes to the law surrounding antisocial behaviour.
One participant said;
Course very informative and useful, I particularly liked the alternatives to legal action and use of other tools to deal with antisocial behaviour.
Housing Adviser Sarah, who led the course, commented.
There was a lot of useful discussion regarding the different experiences of dealing with antisocial behaviour by the social landlords and an exchange of approaches followed and what had proved successful.
Many attendees appreciated the clarity the course offered on the rights and responsibilities in relation to antisocial behaviour, namely:
- legislative and policy sources that govern antisocial behaviour in housing
- preventative measures to avoid the occurrence of antisocial behaviour
- dealing with a complaint of antisocial behaviour
- alternatives to possession action
- taking possession action, human rights defence
- legal orders the court can make
- social landlord’s responsibility for antisocial neighbours
- implications for the tenant following possession action
- avenues of complaint for tenant if dissatisfied with action taken
- dealing with antisocial behaviour in the private sector.
Participants on this course also benefitted from practical examples of Housing Rights experiences with antisocial behaviour, particularly those that progressed to court stage.
