Getting it right

With one in five households now renting privately, it is critical that the right structures are put in place to raise standards for those making their home in the sector.

This years conference will examine best practice for the private rented sector across from Scotland, Wales, England and Ireland. It will cover the key areas likely to be debated in government proposals expected to be published for consultation later this year.

The experts

We are delighted to have the Minister for Communities Paul Givan MLA give the key note address on the day.  Professor Paddy Gray will then set the scene for us, giving an overview of private renting developments.

The return of Senator Aideen Hayden, Chairperson of Threshold, will bring the Southern Ireland perspective to the day. Senator Hayden will be looking specifically at security of tenure.

From England, Professor Tony Crook from the University of Sheffield will be presenting on institutional investment in the private rented sector.

From Scotland we have Susan Aktemel from Homes for Good, talking about a new private rented sector hub that aims to help both landlords and tenants.

We also welcome Ben Beadle from TDS NI who will look at how regulation can improve standards. This will be followed by presentations highlighting experience elsewhere to improve regulations for both landlords and letting agents.

Charlotte McHaffie from the Scottish Government will be presenting on the Scottish experience of letting agent regulation, including recent developments such as the development of a Code of Practice. From Wales, Shelter Cymru Campaign Manager Jennie Bibbings will be telling us about Wales’ experience of implementing landlord licensing in the new Rent Smart Wales model.

Local representation will come in the form of 2 panels, offering plenty of opportunities for lively discussion around the key issues likely to be of most interest to stakeholders.

Who should attend?

This event will be of great benefit to housing professionals, landlords, council workers, tenants and academics who want to know what changes we need to improve  the private rented sector in Northern Ireland.
