Homelessness

Housing Rights is piloting a new service that aims to prevent homelessness amongst people leaving prison by continuing to support these people beyond the prison gates.  We are very grateful to the NI Housing Executive for providing us with the funding to run this service, known as “Beyond the Gate”.

The latest Northern Ireland Housing Bulletin shows that there has been a significant increase of 31% in the number of homeless applicants being awarded the full duty homelessness status by the Housing Executive,

The Bulletin, which covers the period of July to September 2014, also shows an 8% (408) increase in the number of households presenting as homeless to the Housing Executive, compared to the previous quarter.

The UK Supreme Court will hear a trio of cases between December 15 and 17 on the issue of which homeless applicants are deemed to be vulnerable, and entitled to assistance, by warrant of this vulnerability.   This hearing has been deemed the most important case on homelessness in decades.
