Right to buy for housing association tenants ends in August 2022

The Housing (Amendment) Act (Northern Ireland) 2020 received Royal Assent on 28 August 2020. This intention of this act is to reverse the effect of the Office of National Statistics decision to classify housing associations as public bodies. One of the most significant changes the act will have for tenants is the removal of the statutory right for secure housing association tenants to purchase their home.

Problems with Universal Credit highlighted by BBC

Legislation ending HA right to buy passes final stage in assembly

1 July 2020

This week the Housing (Amendment) Bill passed its final stage in the NI Assembly. In addition to other changes to the regulation of housing associations, the bill will end the compulsory house sales scheme for housing association tenants.

Ending the right to buy for housing associations

Next week the Northern Ireland Assembly is due to debate the Housing Amendment Bill (NI) 2020. The Bill will go through the Assembly by accelerated passage and will amend existing laws for Housing Associations to facilitate the reversal of the 2016 ONS reclassification which made Housing Associations public bodies.

NIHE Customer Support and Tenancy Sustainment Strategy Response

Housing Rights has responded to the Housing Executive's Draft Cusomter Support and Tenancy Sustainment Strategy for 2019 to 2022. We welcome the Strategy's focus on prevention of tenancy breakdown and homelessness and have made a number of recommendations in our response which we hope will help to ensure a commitment to tenancy sustainment across all tenures.
