Sandra is a tenant of the Northern Ireland Housing Executive who was represented at court by Emma from our Housing Possession Court Duty Scheme, a project that provides court representation to people who have been taken to court because of rent or mortgage arrears.

The Housing Executive’s latest Community Cohesion Strategy was launched at the new Girdwood Community Hub on Friday 19 February 2016.

The strategy covers the period from 2015-2020 and aims to deliver on NIHE’s vision for housing; “…in which housing plays its part in creating a peaceful, inclusive, prosperous and fair society”.

When someone is granted a new social tenancy, they'll generally need to furnish the property from scratch.  For many, this may just mean moving existing furnishings from another property or a storage centre into their new home.  But, some new tenants will have nothing to put in their new home and this can make settling in incredibly challenging.

Plans to increase the level of tenant participation have just been published by the Department for Social Development. ‘A Tenant Participation Strategy for NI: 2015 to 2020’ sets out the actions that social landlords should take to give tenants the opportunity to have a say in the decisions that affect them.

Recently, a social worker contacted Housing Rights to ask if we could help his client John.  John’s home had been left in a poor state of repair after adaptations were carried out and his housing association had told him that he’d have to cover the cost of redecorating himself.

Response to NIHE Financial Inclusion Strategy

Housing Rights supports the Housing Executive’s aim of tackling financial inclusion by improving their customers’ financial wellbeing. We view this strategy as a positive recognition by the Housing Executive of their role in supporting tenants in this area.

Professor Eileen Evason’s working group has published its report on how Welfare Reform should be mitigated by the NI Executive. The group’s recommendations include the full mitigation of the “bedroom tax”, and the mitigation of the household benefits cap, for an initial period of 4 years.

James is 20 years old and a very vulnerable young adult. He spent time in care growing up, and has struggled with mental health issues in his life.

James had a tenancy with a housing association, but unfortunately experienced intimidation, threats and antisocial behavior at the property.  He became frightened to stay there and ended up staying with his Aunt, where he felt safe.

Our Community Housing Advice Partnership recently received a call from a support worker at MACS. MACS is an organisation that helps young people who haven't had a fair deal.  This particular call from MACS was about Paul, a vulnerable 20 year old who currently had nowhere permanent to live.
