Local landlord fined for failing to register HMO

Although a new HMO regime is imminent with the introduction of a new Houses in Multiple Occupation (NI) Act 2016, the current definition and requirement to register continue to apply.  Landlords need to ensure that they have complied with the current requirements and that their registration details are up to date.

ADVISER: Assisting with allegations of unlawful evictions

The dedicated advisers on our housing helpline answer calls from the public from 09:30 until 14:30 Monday to Friday.  Recently, they’ve had quite a few calls from tenants who’ve been asked by a landlord to vacate their homes in a matter of days.  We’ve also spoken with a few people who have been evicted illegally and thought now might be a good opportunity to review the procedures that landlords must follow in order to regain possession of a property from a private tenant.

Tips for surviving in a student rental

As students across NI get their “A” level results we've come up with some handy tips for anyone, and particularly for new students, who is planning on taking on a new rental tenancy. Many students heading off to college or university will choose to rent privately.  The sector has grown rapidly in recent years and now makes up for 17% of all households, nearly 130,000 homes in Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland sees biggest fall in home ownership in the UK

2 August 2016

Northern Ireland has seen home ownership fall from 73% at its peak in 2006, to 63% now. A think tank from the Resolution Foundation used data from the Office for National Statistics' Labour Force Survey (LFS) to look at home ownership in the UK. 

They found that Northern Ireland has seen the biggest fall in home ownership in the UK.

ADVISER: Rent rebate for private tenant

Our adviser Severina recently helped a client claim a huge overpayment of rent back from an estate agent.  The client, Lesley, had overpaid her rent account by a sizeable amount during the three years she had lived in her private tenancy.  It can be difficult to reconcile the amount of rent owed with the amount of money paid towards rent.  For this reason, it’s vitally important that tenants keep accurate accounts of all payments they make and get and keep receipts for any cash payments made
