Housing Rights sees two and a half times increase in the number of private tenants contacting them for advice about their landlord selling up

In the past year, a local charity has seen a 2.5 fold increase in the number of people seeking help because their landlord is selling their home.

Housing Rights advice manager Brenda Parker stressed the importance of private renters understanding their rights, and not feeling pressured to move early just because the property is for sale.

Falling Behind: Local Housing Allowance research

Falling Behind: Exploring the gap between Local Housing Allowance and the availability of affordable private rented accommodation in Northern Ireland.

This research shows that renting privately in Northern Ireland is becoming increasingly unaffordable for people who rely on housing benefit to pay their rent. Almost 9 out of 10 of rental properties are out of reach for people receiving Housing Benefit with the research showing that as little as 12% of properties in the sector would have their rent fully covered by the amount of benefit available.

NatWest relaxes restrictions on tenants in receipt of benefits

NatWest has ended its policy of refusing to lend to landlords who provide tenancies to people in receipt of social security benefits. The bank announced that this policy change followed an "extensive review" of its buy-to-let policies.

Report says England’s Right to Rent scheme is “causing racial discrimination” and should be abandoned

A new report from the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants (JCWI) has found that migrants, British citizens without passports and Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) groups living in England are being discriminated against when searching for a home in the Private Rented Sector (PRS), due to the Government’s Right to Rent Scheme.

New immigration legislation on the way
