Landlords in East Midlands to check immigration status from December

4 September 2014

Private landlords in the East Midlands will face fines of £3,000 if they fail to check their tenants immigration status and ensure they have the right to rent in the UK.

The first phase of this scheme will be launched on the 1st of December and will run in Birmingham, Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton. Landlords in these places will be required to check the immigration status of adults entering a new tenancy.

Conference on the Future of Private Renting in NI

Fundamental Changes to Immigration System Enacted

Royal Assent has now been received for the controversial Immigration Act 2014. The Act contains 77 clauses that fundamentally change key elements of the immigration system in order to make it more difficult for migrants to enter and stay in the UK illegally.

Labour Party Bid to Ban Letting Fees Fails

14 May 2014

The Labour Party has failed in an attempt to ban letting agents from charging fees to private rented tenants.

MPs defeated by 53 votes the party’s amendment to the Consumer Rights Bill to ban letting agent fees. Only three Conservative and Lib Dem MPs supported the opposition move however five Northern Ireland MPs were in support of the amendment (Mark Durkan, Lady Herman, Naomi Long, Ian Paisley and Jim Shannon).

Landlord registration up and running

25 February 2014

In a long awaited development private landlords in Northern Ireland are now required to provide information about themselves and their properties.

From 25th February, every private landlord in Northern Ireland must register with the Landlord Registration Scheme and provide this information - elements of which is available on government website NI Direct.

Further delays to Landlord Registration

With the focus of government firmly on the future of social housing in Northern Ireland it is perhaps not surprising that issues relating to the private rented sector are lower on the Department for Social Development’s (DSD) agenda.

This is particularly evident in regard to the long awaited project to introduce a registration scheme for landlords – a provision for which was first included in the Private Tenancies (Northern Ireland) Order 2006.
