Resolving Housing Disputes Using Mediation

Housing Rights launched a new mediation service in 2020 to help resolve disputes between private tenants and landlords. The Housing Mediation Service is funded by the Department for Communities and provides an
alternative way to resolve disputes in the private rented sector.

Since its launch, the Housing Mediation Service has helped almost 200 private tenants and landlords come to an agreement on a housing dispute.

We have since expanded our mediation services to our Housing Rights for Young People project. This service is for young people aged 18 to 25 years old who are experiencing difficulties in any housing situation,
including the private rented sector and social housing.

Housing Rights mediation services are alternative dispute resolution services aimed at:

  • Helping people to come to an understanding of their differences
  • Resolving housing disputes
  • Preventing homelessness

This guide has been created to help identify when a housing dispute could be resolved through mediation.
