Housing Rights’ annual private rented sector conference will be held on Wednesday 20^th November, in the Skainos Centre, Belfast. The event is kindly sponsored by TDS NI

With the role of the sector taking on increasing importance in meeting housing need, this year’s conference has a bumper programme and will unpack key issues including:

The impact of Brexit on the PRS
Dispute resolution, including the role for mediation
Improving regulation and enforcement with a focus on the emergence of Air BnB and an update on the new HMO regime
Learning from landlords and tenants including a focus on; the experiences of older tenants, the views of private landlords and the work to involve tenants in policy decisions.
Looking ahead to how the sector can meet the challenges presented by welfare reform.

PRS Practitioner Workshops

A selection of practitioner workshops will draw on themes put forward by our plenary speakers to give delegates the opportunity to further explore key issues impacting the sector.

Exploring the impact of Brexit on private renting

Exploring some of the issues facing housing practitioners with Brexit. Housing Rights staff will help tease out some of the potential issues facing private tenants and other key stakeholders in the sector as well as share insight from some of the queries and clarification we have received in relation to Brexit related private rented sector issues.

Practical support to sustain tenancies in the PRS

With recent research showing that almost 9 in 10 private rents are not covered by Local Housing Allowance, what additional support may be required to support low income private renters to stay in their homes? How can landlords, letting agents and advisers help?

Dr Martina McAuley, Housing Rights’ Research & Evaluation Officer will talk about new research Housing Rights is carrying out in this area and gather your views and experiences.

Time for a strong tenant voice in the private rented sector?

Reflecting on the value of private tenant engagement to create change in the sector, this session will hear from private tenants themselves on the value of and challenges with creating a strong tenant voice. Delegates will also hear about a brand new Renters Voice project which has just begun at Housing Rights and which will run for the next 3 years.
